“Dr. Sofia Dermisi, is the Runstad Endowed Professor in Real Estate and Professor of Urban Design & Planning at the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments. She holds a degree in Planning & Regional Development Engineering (’98) from the University of Thessaly, Greece and Master and Doctoral degrees (’99 and ’02) from the Harvard Design School. The fundamental knowledge obtained on interdisciplinary subjects spanning planning, economics, sustainability and Geographic Information Systems were instrumental not only in the successful completion of her graduate work but continue to serve her well in her academic career. Dr. Dermisi’s research focuses on major downtown locations, with three areas of emphasis: sustainability, disasters (terrorism, life – safety issues) and market analysis. She was the recipient of the 2011 William Kinnard Young Scholar Award from the American Real Estate Society in recognition of her high quality research contributions to the real estate discipline achieved during the first 10 years of receiving her doctorate while under the age of 40. Other awards include six best manuscript awards and a best practice award from the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA)/International. She has published more than twenty papers and her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Real Estate Research Institute and other organizations.
